"Data warehouse" concept and technology originated about 4 decades ago. Some of the first users were Telecommunication businesses as well as banking / insurance businesses. They were trying to address business challenges of finding relevant customer related information posed by massive amounts of data captured in disparate systems. Given, the prevalent hardware / software technologies available at the time, creation of a data warehouse, where data from disparate systems was extracted, cleansed, and loaded in a central repository, was the logical approach. In those industries, even today, data warehouses are dominant when it comes to analyzing data or finding all relevant information about a customer or a family.

Many of the Industrial organizations also followed the same method and established massive data warehouses. However, in the recent years, those Industrial organizations are struggling with the up-keep and enhancements of their data warehouses. The support requirements to create, maintain, update a data warehouse are substantial in terms of efforts, time, and money. Additionally, hyper-competition, need for a first mover advantage, requirement for a dramatically lower through life cycle costs, etc. have all resulted in businesses requiring ‘fresh' information from across disparate systems on-demand. Data warehousing technology simply lacks on many counts to meet such fast paced near real-time requirements under tight access / security control.

These practical issues have led to the advent of ‘logical data warehouse' framework. Work is underway. However, some of the key tenants include the ability to have a data virtualization layer on top of disparate systems, ability to honor and leverage application specific access control / security logic, common metadata and metadata management capabilities, data quality assurance services, performance requirements / parameters, etc. As the name ‘Logical datawarehouse' suggests, there is no requirement to build / maintain a physical repository / data warehouse.

eQube-BI has the inherent capability to create a data virtualization layer on top of disparate systems while accessing data from those systems honoring the underlying applications' access control / security logic. eQube platform provides common metadata management capabilities and eQube-DP provide data quality assurance services. eQube platform has the necessary ingredients to implement a Logical data warehouse.
